He was a childhood friend of James Cotton, who was serving as an apprentice of Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller) at the time. The two boys persisted in skipping school together for the more enticing lure of jamming on their harmonicas, and Cotton taught Simmons the harp techniques he was learning from the master. R.I.P. Booker T. & the MGs' Bassist Donald " ..The Associated Press reports that Donald "Duck" Dunn (pictured above far right), the legendary bassist for Booker T. & the MGs , the Blues Brothers band, and several others, has died. He passed in his sleep in Tokyo, where he was touring with longtime collaborator and friend Steve Cropper. He was 70. Dunn was a mainstay of Memphis's soul scene. In 1961 at the age of 20, he became a member of the Mar-Keys, an early all-instrumental Stax band. In 1965, he joined Cropper, Al Jackson, and Booker T. I naturally thought of posting “Green Onions.” Then, I found out that Dunn joined the band after the song was released. Mayo Williams cover) “Corrina, Corrina” is an old standard in the tradition of music by Lead Belly, Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, and their cohorts. It was written in 1928 before country, folk, bluegrass and blues were so clearly divided. Umphrey’s McGee Welcomes Buddy Guy to Chicag ..Yesterday was a day of ups and downs for HT faves Umphrey’s McGee as the group took a beating on the internet for their new Chicago theme song and then went on perform with legendary blues man Buddy Guy at a private show in Chicago for Choose Chicago volunteers. For the group’s performance at Park West, the band debuted their theme song for The Windy City titled “Chicago.” The tune went viral on Thursday and not in a good way. An A.V. I guess I didn’t know how heavily the Stones were influenced by R&B.; Muddy Waters was one of Keith’s early heroes, and he went to great lengths to get his hands on these records. It’s crazy that I barely remember a time at which anything I wanted to hear wasn’t at my fingertips — and that high school kids never experienced that scarcity at all.
